Han Dynasty Gold-inlaid Iron Ruler

The gold-inlaid iron ruler is a rare treasure among Han Dynasty metrological cultural relics. Different from common bronze and jade rulers, it takes wrought iron as the base and adopts the gold-inlay technique to embed gold threads into the grooves of the iron body as scales and decorative patterns, representing the high integration of Han Dynasty metallurgical technology and measurement system. Most unearthed Han Dynasty gold-inlaid iron rulers follow the ten-cun standard with precise scale division. Both sides of the ruler are often engraved with cloud patterns, kui-dragon motifs and geometric borders. The gold threads form a sharp contrast with the dark brown iron base. Despite thousands of years of rust and erosion, the exquisite craftsmanship of that era is still discernible, making it important physical evidence for studying the Han Dynasty metrological system and fine metal craftsmanship.
Such iron rulers are mostly unearthed from middle and high-level noble tombs of the Han Dynasty, whose owners were mostly civil officials or officers in charge of metrology, serving as a tangible symbol of status and official duties. Due to the easy oxidation and rust of iron, it is much more difficult to preserve than bronze and jade. Very few gold-inlaid iron rulers have survived intact to this day, with fewer than ten complete pieces existing nationwide and most being only fragments. Most of them are collected in local archaeological institutions and warehouses, and rarely appear in permanent exhibitions. Therefore, the public has very low awareness of such metrological relics, making them a very obscure category of Han Dynasty metal cultural relics.
