Tang Dynasty Marbled Glaze Powder Box

The marbled glaze powder box is an exclusive cosmetic artifact for noble women of the Tang Dynasty, and a very niche category of marbled porcelain among ancient ceramics. Different from well-known mainstream ceramic categories such as Tri-colored glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty, Yue celadon and Xing white porcelain, it is made by kneading brown and white porcelain clay alternately, followed by throwing, shaping, transparent glaze application and kiln firing. The body presents naturally interlaced wood grain, water ripple or medallion patterns, and each piece has unique and irreproducible textures. Most of these powder boxes are oblate with tightly fitting lids, featuring a small and exquisite shape and warm glossy glaze, representing the deep integration of Tang Dynasty ceramic craftsmanship and noble life aesthetics.
Such marbled powder boxes are mostly unearthed from high-level noble tombs and palace sites in the Central Plains and Jiangnan regions of the Tang Dynasty, whose owners were mostly imperial women and families of high-ranking officials, serving as a tangible symbol of social status and life delicacy. Due to the complicated production process of marbled porcelain, the body is prone to cracking and deformation, resulting in an extremely low yield. Produced exclusively for upper-class nobles, very few have survived to this day, and intact fine pieces are even rarer. At present, most of them are collected in local archaeological institutions and Tang-themed exhibition halls, and rarely appear alone in public permanent exhibitions. The public’s understanding of Tang ceramics is mostly concentrated on tri-colored glazed pottery and famous celadon and white porcelain, with very little knowledge of niche craft categories like marbled porcelain, making it a very obscure sub-category of ancient ceramic cultural relics.
