This painted pottery cylinder jar dates back roughly 5,500 years to the Hongshan Culture. It was discovered in the Aru Horqin Banner area of Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. What makes it special is not simply its shape, but the fact that one single vessel brings together cultural elements from different regions.
Look closely at its patterns, and you will discover something fascinating: from top to bottom, the vessel almost looks like a “map of cultural exchange” from 5,500 years ago.
The diamond grid pattern at the top is believed to show Central Asian cultural influence. This suggests that, around 5,500 years ago, the communities of western Liaoning may already have been connected to much more distant regions.
Local Hongshan Culture
The dense scale-like pattern in the middle represents a distinctive local element of the Hongshan Culture. Known as a dragon-scale pattern, it reflects the unique artistic style of the Hongshan people and their long-standing association with dragon imagery.
Yangshao Cultural Influence
The linked floral pattern at the bottom is believed to be connected with the Yangshao Culture of the Yellow River Valley, particularly the rose-like motifs characteristic of Miaodigou-style painted pottery.
