Jiahu Bone Flute

The Jiahu Bone Flutes were discovered at the Jiahu site in Wuyang, Henan, dating back approximately 7,800–9,000 years. They are among the earliest known wind instruments discovered in China. Most were made from the long bones of birds such as cranes and were drilled with multiple finger holes. Some can still produce musical notes today.
It is remarkable to imagine that nearly 9,000 years ago, people in the Neolithic period were already capable of creating instruments that could produce melodies. The bone flutes demonstrate sophisticated musical knowledge and may have played roles in rituals, entertainment, and everyday social life.
