Shimao Mouth Harp

The Shimao Mouth Harp was discovered at the Shimao archaeological site in Shaanxi and dates back approximately 4,000 years. It is remarkably small, usually only about eight to nine centimeters long, yet it was a functional musical instrument. The harps were mainly made from cattle ribs, with a thin vibrating tongue in the center.
To play it, the musician held the mouth harp near the lips and pulled a small string, causing the tongue to vibrate. The mouth itself acted as a resonating chamber, allowing the player to change the sound. Although tiny and simple in appearance, the instrument demonstrates surprisingly sophisticated musical craftsmanship. More than 20 mouth harps and unfinished pieces were discovered at Shimao, suggesting that the instruments may have been produced locally.
