Around the 24th day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar, many Yi communities in Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guizhou celebrate the spectacular Torch Festival. After nightfall, enormous torches are lit throughout the villages. People carry smaller torches through their homes and fields, transforming the night into what looks like a “sea of fire.”
The Torch Festival is much more than a celebration. It is connected with ancient traditions of fire worship, protection from pests, and prayers for a good harvest. People sing and dance around the torches, while activities such as horse racing, wrestling, and archery are also held. Here, fire represents not only a force of nature but also a symbol connecting people with the land and their community.
