The Yellow River mud seal is a niche traditional folk custom artifact and New Year craft originating in the Yellow River estuary area. Different from stone seal carving and Shoushan stone seals, it is made of fine silt from the Yellow River. As an original ecological traditional cultural relic exclusive to the Yellow River basin, it only spreads in local areas such as Dongying, Shandong Province and is rarely known by the public.
Its production process has distinct regional characteristics. Craftsmen select pure silt from the deep layer of the Yellow River and go through more than ten pure manual processes including elutriation, precipitation, sun drying, mud kneading, blank making, carving, shade drying and polishing. No chemical raw materials are added in the whole process, retaining the simple texture of Yellow River soil to the greatest extent. Most seal patterns are derived from fortune characters, auspicious beasts, flowers, birds and New Year auspicious patterns, fitting the folk custom core of praying for blessings in the Spring Festival.
