Jiaxian Baiyun Mountain Amnesty Ritual

The Amnesty Ritual at Baiyun Mountain in Jiaxian County, Yulin, Shaanxi, is a unique folk custom held on the 8th day of the first lunar month each year. Originating from the Taoist belief that the Heavenly Official bestows blessings and pardons sins, it has a history of several hundred years. Presided over by Taoist priests from Baiyun Mountain Temple, the ritual involves placing tablets marked with the character “amnesty”, blessing documents, and paper figurines symbolizing sins into a special wooden boat. The boat slides down a cable from the mountain top and is burned at the foot of the mountain, symbolizing the absolution of all human misfortunes and sins and praying for peace in the new year.
The core of the ritual is the “amnesty boat” descending from the sky. The cable stretches for hundreds of meters, and the sliding boat is accompanied by firecrackers, drum music, and the blessings of the crowd, creating a spectacular scene. Unlike common temple fairs, the amnesty ritual follows a complete set of Taoist ceremonial procedures, from altar setup and scripture chanting to boat release and burning, all following strict rules. It is one of the few Taoist folk activities in northern Shaanxi that retains complete ancient rituals, embodying the simple wish of people on the Loess Plateau to ward off disasters and welcome good fortune.
