\nThe silver wine-chip tube inscribed “Analects Jade Candle” from the Tang Dynasty is an exclusive utensil for noble banquets and drinking games. Unearthed in 1982 from the silverware hoard at Dingmao Bridge, Dantu, Jiangsu, it is the only complete surviving Tang Dynasty drinking game artifact in China. The whole set consists of a tube body and a base, all made of gilded silver. The top of the tube is engraved with scrolling grass, dragon and phoenix patterns, and the front is inscribed with the four characters “Analects Jade Candle”. Inside the tube are fifty silver wine chips, each engraved with a famous quote from The Analects and corresponding drinking rules. For example, “It is such a delight to have friends coming from afar” corresponds to “toast the guest one cup”, cleverly integrating Confucian classics with popular drinking game culture.

The term “Jade Candle” comes from the ancient meaning of “harmonious weather and peaceful times”, symbolizing the auspicious atmosphere of banquets. The rule design of the wine chips is hierarchical and interesting, including both penalty toasts and friendly toasts, completely restoring the drinking game procedure of Tang Dynasty banquets.
