It is mainly unearthed from Longshan Cultural sites in Shandong and northern Jiangsu provinces. Its most astonishing feature is its wall as thin as an eggshell, with the thinnest part measuring only 0.2 to 0.5 millimeters, comparable to the thickness of a modern eggshell, hence its name. The whole vessel consists of a cup body, a stem and a base, with a slender and elegant shape. Its surface is pitch-black and glossy without extra decorations, presenting a simple yet advanced aesthetic through minimalist lines and supreme craftsmanship.
This type of stemmed cup was not an everyday utensil, but a ritual vessel used by ancestors for sacrifices and banquets, symbolizing the status and power of tribal nobles. In the prehistoric era before the full popularization of wheel-throwing technology, firing such thin-bodied, uniformly black pottery required precise purification of clay, forming skills and kiln temperature control, representing the pinnacle of China’s prehistoric pottery industry. Due to the extremely thin body that is easily broken, few intact eggshell black pottery cups have survived. It is praised as “the most exquisite work of global civilization 4,000 years ago”.

[1

post-968","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
