It was specially used to hold down the four corners of mats to prevent the edges from curling up when people stood up. The mainstream shapes are auspicious beasts such as leopards, bears, deer and pixiu, cast in bronze and fully gilded. Some fine pieces are also decorated with gold-silver inlay patterns and gem inlays. Usually only 3 to 10 centimeters tall, these weights are small in size but full and vivid in shape, vividly depicting the lazy posture and lively charm of animals. They are exquisite objects for home decoration and daily use by Han Dynasty nobles. With the popularization of high-legged furniture in later dynasties, the floor-sitting lifestyle faded out of the mainstream, and bronze weights also gradually disappeared from history. Almost all surviving complete gilded specimens come from royal and noble tombs.
Different from bronze ritual vessels and weapons that carry political and military functions, beast-shaped bronze weights directly reflect the details of ancient people’s daily life, and are a micro-embodiment of the Han Dynasty’s burial concept of “treating the dead as if they were alive”. Tomb owners would bury their favorite mat weights with them, hoping to continue the same exquisite living experience in the underworld. These weights not only reflect the mature level of bronze gilding technology in the Han Dynasty, but also imply the ancient people’s spiritual pursuit of using auspicious beasts to guard the house, ward off evil and welcome blessings. They are precious physical materials for studying the social life history and aesthetic changes of the Han Dynasty.

[1

post-999","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
