Western Xia Dynasty: Green Glazed Chiwen

Unearthed from the Western Xia Imperial Tombs in Yinchuan, Ningxia, this green glazed chiwen is one of the largest surviving ancient glazed roof ornaments in China, now preserved in the National Museum of China. Standing 152 centimeters tall, it takes the shape of a dragon head with a fish body, with a wide-open mouth, exposed fangs, bulging eyes, and scale patterns carved all over its body, coated in bright emerald green glaze. The component was fired in two sections and joined together, requiring sophisticated craftsmanship, and was exclusively used as a ridge ornament for Western Xia imperial architecture.
According to legend, chiwen is one of the nine sons of the dragon, with a natural appetite for fire. Ancient people placed them on both ends of palace ridges, praying that they would subdue fire with water and ward off disasters. Building on the Central Plains architectural system, the Western Xia Dynasty integrated its own aesthetic style. This glazed chiwen not only testifies to the superb porcelain craftsmanship of the Western Xia, but also reflects the deep cultural integration between the Tangut people and the Central Plains, serving as a vivid embodiment of the strict hierarchy and imperial grandeur of the Western Xia regime.
