Yi Ethnic Cuotaiji Opera

The Yi ethnic Cuotaiji is an ancient Nuo opera popular in Yi villages of Weining, Guizhou. Known as a “living fossil of drama”, it is a very niche traditional folk ritual of ethnic minorities. Different from common Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera and local flower lantern operas, it is primitive and simple without stage modifications, performed only in specific Yi sacrificial festivals with extremely limited audience and communication scope.
Centering on sacrifice, blessing and exorcism, the whole Cuotaiji performance features ancient wooden masks worn by performers, who wear coarse black clothes and interpret the ancient stories of ancestors’ migration, land reclamation, farming and reproduction with minimalist body movements and ancient Yi language chants. Without gorgeous singing and complicated props, the whole ritual retains the most primitive witch sacrifice and embryonic dramatic form of southwest ethnic minorities.
