The brown-glaze incised flat pot of the Western Xia Dynasty is a unique porcelain category created by the Tangut people of the Western Xia, and a typical product combining nomadic living needs and Central Plains porcelain-making technology. The vessel has a flat round body with bridge-shaped lugs on both sides, which is convenient for tying ropes to carry on the back or fasten on horseback, perfectly adapting to the migratory life of the Tangut people who moved with water and grass. The surface of the vessel adopts an incising technique: brown glaze is applied all over first, then the excess glaze is carved off along the pattern outline, exposing the beige clay body to form color contrast. The patterns are mainly peonies and scrolling grasses, with bold and powerful carving strokes, simple and bold style, full of rich prairie ethnic charm. The total surviving quantity of Western Xia porcelain is far less than that of various Central Plains kilns, and complete incised flat pots are scarce items in ceramic collections.
This type of flat pot is more than a simple water container; it is an intuitive carrier of Western Xia ethnic culture and handicraft level. After learning the Central Plains porcelain-making technology, the Tangut people did not copy the shapes of Han-style vessels. Instead, they reconstructed the vessel shape and decorative logic based on their own living scenarios, injecting the practical needs and aesthetic preferences of nomadic peoples into porcelain production. It is not only physical evidence of ethnic cultural exchanges during the Song and Western Xia periods, but also core physical material for studying the daily life, economy, technology and aesthetic orientation of Western Xia society.
