Western Han Dynasty Gilded Bronze Silkworm

The gilded bronze silkworm of the Western Han Dynasty is an iconic miniature artifact of Han Dynasty sericulture and Silk Road culture. Only a few specimens have been unearthed in China, primarily in Shiquan County, Shaanxi, with the most complete one measuring merely 5.6 centimeters in length. Cast in bronze and fully gilded, it is shaped like a mature silkworm before spinning silk—head raised as if secreting thread, body plump and round, with nine pairs of thoracic and abdominal legs clearly distinguishable, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. This bronze silkworm was found along the ancient Ziwu Road, a crucial Han Dynasty route connecting Chang’an to Hanzhong and Bashu, and linking to the Southern Silk Road. Its discovery directly confirms that southern Shaanxi was already a major sericulture center and silk trade node in the Han Dynasty.
Unlike grand bronze ritual vessels, the gilded bronze silkworm carries enormous historical information in a tiny size. Han Dynasty rulers attached great importance to agriculture and sericulture; the empress held an annual “Silkworm-Rearing Ceremony” to encourage women across the country to engage in silk weaving, and silk itself was the core material for foreign trade and diplomatic gifts of the Han Empire. Using precious bronze gilding to shape an ordinary domestic silkworm itself demonstrates the special status of sericulture in Han Dynasty social economy and national strategy. It is both the ancients’ material tribute to the silkworm that “spins silk until its last breath” and the most vivid microscopic footnote to the starting point of the Silk Road.
