Qing Dynasty Brocade-ground Cloisonné Melon and Fruit Snuff Bottle

The Qing Dynasty brocade-ground cloisonné melon and fruit snuff bottle is a niche imperial literary artifact of the Qing court. Different from well-known large-scale porcelain and cloisonné ornaments, it features a small and exquisite shape, specially designed for the daily appreciation of imperial nobles. Its most distinctive craft is the brocade ground pattern. Craftsmen wove dense gold wires into layered geometric brocade patterns covering the entire surface, followed by multiple elaborate processes including wire inlay, enamel filling, glaze firing, polishing and gilding. With intricate regular patterns and delicate texture, it represents the refined development of cloisonné craftsmanship in the Qing Dynasty.
Most of these snuff bottles are decorated with melon and vine patterns, carved with auspicious fruits such as pumpkins, pomegranates and grapes, symbolizing prosperity in offspring, annual harvest and lasting blessings. In the Qing Dynasty, snuff bottles were not only practical containers for snuff but also symbols of social status and aesthetic taste. Brocade-ground cloisonné snuff bottles are extremely rare in existence. Compared with ordinary glass and jade snuff bottles, they require higher craftsmanship and have fewer surviving treasures. Today, most of them are collected in niche cultural and museum exhibitions and are little known to the public.
