Tang Dynasty Silver Pingtuo Baoxiang Flower Mirror Box

Silver pingtuo is a unique luxurious lacquer craft of the Tang Dynasty, and the silver pingtuo Baoxiang flower mirror box is a rare daily treasure among such crafts, specially designed for noble women of the Tang Dynasty to store bronze mirrors. It takes a wooden body as the base, and after repeated lacquering, thin silver pieces with engraved patterns are embedded in the lacquer layer, then polished to make the silver pieces completely flush with the lacquer surface, finally presenting the effect of silver white and lacquer black reflecting each other. The surface of the mirror box is mostly decorated with full Baoxiang flower patterns and interlocking flower and bird motifs, with intricate and neat layout and restrained elegant luster, representing the perfect integration of Tang Dynasty lacquer craftsmanship and gold and silver fine workmanship.
Such mirror boxes are mostly unearthed from high-ranking noble tombs and palace sites in the Central Plains region of the Tang Dynasty, whose owners were mostly imperial women and families of high-ranking officials, serving as a tangible symbol of life delicacy and social status at that time. Due to the complicated and time-consuming silver pingtuo craft, and the fact that lacquer bodies and silver pieces are prone to corrosion and peeling in humid environments, very few Tang Dynasty silver pingtuo mirror boxes have been completely preserved to this day, and fine pieces are even fewer. At present, most of them are collected in provincial archaeological research institutes and special lacquer exhibition halls, and rarely exhibited in public permanent exhibitions. The public’s understanding of Tang Dynasty lacquerware mostly focuses on tri-colored glazed pottery and ordinary wood lacquer, with very little knowledge of high-end special crafts like silver pingtuo, making it a very obscure category of Tang Dynasty cultural relics.
