The Aluwo Luo Festival is a unique traditional annual grand ceremony of the Achang people in Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan. “Alu” and “Woluo” were originally two ancient sacrificial songs and dances of the Achang people, which later gradually merged into a unified festival. It is mainly prevalent in Achang settlements such as Longchuan and Lianghe, usually held in mid-first lunar month. Different from well-known Yunnan ethnic festivals such as the Dai Water-Splashing Festival and the Jingpo Munao Zongge Festival, the Aluwo Luo Festival has the dual connotations of creation sacrifice and farming blessing. Its core is to commemorate the Achang founding ancestors Zhepama and Zhemima, celebrate the harvest, and pray for prosperity of people and livestock and village peace in the coming year.
The ritual of the Aluwo Luo Festival retains strong primitive creation belief characteristics. On the day of the festival, each village builds iconic colored sheds of green dragons and white elephants. Clan members in traditional costumes dance the Alu dance and Woluo dance around the sheds, with vigorous and simple dance steps, chanting ancient creation epics. Traditional activities such as sun god worship, archery performances and antiphonal singing are also held during the ceremony, and each family prepares hand-grabbed rice and rice wine to entertain guests. With the impact of modern culture, only a few core Achang villages still fully inherit the traditional ritual process and dance forms today. The outside world has very limited understanding of it, making it a very niche living cultural heritage among the ethnic folk customs of Yunnan.
